Housed in the form CSR Sugar refinery site on the water's edge by Johnston's Bay in Pyrmont, Sugaroom offers their customers a private haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. There is also a beautiful alfresco dining area that I can only imagine would be lovely on a sunny warm day, but tonight we are seated in the roomy and modern internal restaurant area. The staff are attentive and friendly, and promptly seats us at a window-side table upon entering the restaurant. One waitress also offers to take a photo of us when she notices we have a camera :)

Inside dining area
Warm crusty sourdough bread served with olive oil and pink salt
A special mention must be made for their well-made bread, since the crust was extra crunchy and the bread was served warm.
Tea smoked salmon, fennel, celery heart and orange salad, lemon aioli
A light and refreshing entree, with fresh ingredients being matched well to bring out the natural flavours of the tea smoked salmon. I especially enjoyed the juicy orange pieces being mixed in with the salad leaves.
Chargrilled beef fillet, olive and sage gnocchi, confit tomatoes, red wine jus
Tender, flavoursome beef fillet served with tomatoes, onions and olives. The gnocchi on the side was the highlight of the dish for me, with a good balance between softness and chewiness.
Crispy-skin barramundi, thai basil, bean shoot, bok choy, chilli and black bean
We both found this dish slightly disappointing since the barramundi was overcooked and lacking in flavour. However the salad was refreshing and well-made, playing with the contrasting textures of the softer black beans with the crunchiness of the bean shoots.
Passionfruit pavlova, chantilly cream, toffee chard
A well-made interpretation of a classic dessert - I particularly liked the fairy floss that was given on the side.
Chocolate creme brulee, raspberry marshmallow, macerated strawberries
Although this was the dessert that I was particularly excited to try, I was disappointed in the gritty texture of the creme brulee. They may have made a mistake in not mixing it thoroughly enough, however the flavours were rich and dense, and the top was wonderfully crunchy.
Overall a decent dining experience in a beautiful location - definitely a lovely restaurant location for a date or for a special occasion :)
