Mmm it's sushi buffet time! I've been really craving sushi lately, and decided it was time to book in for a sushi buffet at Sushi Samurai. After we were seated, we were quickly explained the rules of the game. In a nutshell, there's a 90 minutes limit (last order taken at 75 minutes), and you have to finish a bowl of miso soup, agedashi tofu and a starter sushi set first before being able to order more. And don't think about eating the toppings and leaving the rice behind - they can charge you for any food wastage. We were pumped and ready :)
Buffet time!
Miso Soup
Agedashi Tofu
Set A
As mentioned earlier, you need to finish the miso soup + agedashi tofu + either set A or set B before being able to order any other parts of the sushi buffet. We both opted for set A, which consisted of salmon, kingfish, prawn, scallops, fish roe and sea urchin sushi, as well as two pieces of chicken karaage.
Mmm definitely my favourite part of the set A - I was surprised at how generously they packed the sea urchin and fish roe in as it was a sushi buffet. Both were made using moist sushi rice and topped generously with fresh ingredients. The chicken karaage was also delicious - crispy and golden on the outside, while still moist and tender on the inside.
The ingredients were all fresh, though I felt that they packed these with more rice than what they usually do so we were both a little full by the time we finished the two sets.
Crispy prawn dumplings and deep-fried oysters
... but it was a buffet so we ordered more! The crispy prawn dumplings were slightly disappointing since they crispy shell was more on the chewy side today, but the oysters were battered well and had a delicious crunch with each bite.
Scampi, scallop and salmon aburi
mmmm now this was good! Despite being packed with more rice than what they would generally put, the scampi meat was sweet and fresh, and the scallop and salmon aburi both had a good balance between the fresh uncooked meat underneath with the smoky charred meat on top. Really addictive.
Lotus chips
Don't know whether they are any healthier than your typical potato chips, but they taste just as good if not better! Well salted and crispy - would make a great accompaniment to some cold beers.
Scallop, kingfish and salmon aburi
Although we were really full by this time, we ordered 4 more pieces of the aburi sushis since they were just too good. We both had a good sushi buffet experience today at sushi samurai - although they packed in more rice than usual (which was expected), the sushi quality was still great and the service was relatively prompt with each orders being brought out to us within 10 minutes.
